So, you've got the retail bug. You've got an idea, and just like a favorite song, can't get it out of your head.  

It's a great time to start a retail business.  

In every downturn, there are new businesses that start up amidst all of the stress and turmoil. As many retailers struggle, and some fall by the wayside, new businesses are born. In fact, another way to think of a retail downturn is that a certain staleness, a certain sameness, settles in; that there's precious little new to excite customers. That certainly has been true in this recession, even driven as it has been by home mortgage and other credit issues. As the retail downturn started a couple of years ago, in category after category you could hear commentary and complaints about the lack of anything new to drive customers into the stores.  

New retail businesses, and the entrepreneurs that dream and create them, serve as a rejuvenating force of innovation, freshness and excitement that helps bring customers back into stores. These stores are the "new growth" in the retail forest, where new ideas, concepts and experiences are nurtured and flourish.  

Many of these new retail businesses represent second careers for their founders. Having been a part of the business world in some fashion, and experienced the staleness firsthand, these entrepreneurs are seeking new personal growth for themselves. This fresh start enables them to pursue their passion, and this passion is the source of the energy and creativity that often makes these new stores so compelling.  

It's a great time to start a retail business.
