Quick Thoughts on Retail Hiring

When it comes to hiring new people it's all about percentages. Some hires are going to be dogs, some are going to be okay and some are going to be stars. Clearly, the objective is to minimize the dogs and maximize the stars. I have always believed in cutting your losses quickly if you find you've ended up with a dog, and be very particular about who you do decide to bring on board.
I have found that two basic rules can guide a small retail owner to a high percentage of successful hires; first, hire people who share your passion, and second, hire people who are easily able to engage you about that passion, rather than the other way around. If they share your passion, and they have the ability to engage you, they will almost always be outstanding ambassadors for your business.
